In 1944 my mother was in the A.T.S planning to get married in March 1945 when she learned that she was eligible for one of the wedding dresses being offered to service personel by the American Red Cross. She applied and was fortunate to be allocated one. All she had to do was supply measurements. It arrived at the camp two days before the wedding so in good time. It was made of heavy white satin and fitted perfectly. It cost her not a penny as they had it cleaned ready for the next lucky bride. It was really beautiful. The sting in the tale to this story is that my future husband and i had saved our free passes to go to Paignton for a weeks leave. They travelled down on sunday but on waking on the monday morning she found she was covered in spots from head to toe- The Measles so they had to come back to Maidstone ( Her parents house ) and she spent the next two weeks in bed alone. Never the less they survived and were married for 54 yrs until my father died in 1999.
