I enlisted in the A.T.S in March 1943 immediately after my 18th birthday and was called to report to Guilford 2weeks later. After the initial training i was posted to Edinborough to be trained as a Teleprinter Operator in the Corps of the Signals Regiment. I was stationed at many placesafter that ie: Chester, Reigate, Dover and Maidstone to name but a few. One instance comes to mind at Maidstone. I had been on night duty but instead of going home to bed in the morning i went for a cycle ride with my boyfriend. On return i found the house i should have been in was a pile of rubble having been hit by a bomb. People were digging, thinking i was inside. I was court marshelled and fined 7days pay for being alive and not in the rubble
I was demobed in August 1945 when all married women had the choice of staying or leaving. My maiden name was West and my number was W/295881.
