After the surrend on 2nd of May three of us were detailed to take a consignment of DDT to a place in the American sector of Austria; to discover on arrival that it was a concentration camp. It was a real shock; we had never seen anything like it. I cannot aptly describe the awful sight of the emaciated people wondering aimlessly around; and the smell was one I shall never forget. When the three of us left the camp we stopped on a mountainside with the intention of having a brew, but we just sat there feeling sick and we all cried. Suddenly it seemed that our fight for freedom had not been in vain, what we had seen could have so easily been England
