Mrs Holmes is 84 yrs old and her contribution has been edited to include only her wartime experiences.
I born in Batley and my first job was assembling gas masks.
My next experience, after getting married and coming to Castleford, was with a voluntary scheme helping in the fields,it was not the Land Army, but it was a government scheme.
My husband was in the terries and
was called up straight away.
He spent a large part of his initial time digging trenches.
He then was posted abroad, sailing round Africa, and then on to Egypt, and then from there to Italy ,back to Egypt and to Israel, he was on the Golan Heights.
The surprising thing is that I only found out about this three weeks ago
because he kept a diary and I would not read it whilst he was alive.
