My father was a soldier with the Worcestershire regiment. I remember him going off to war. He was in China for seven years and I didn't see him in all that time. He was with the SAS for a while and with the Desert Rats. He was given a DCM for bravery in the field by King George VI in 1947, I went with him to collect it.
But at one point, we thought we'd never see him again.
