These are my memories as they arose in discussion.
I lived with my family at 231 Camberwell Road London S.E.5 tel. Rodney 4783.Our garden was close to United Dairies and backed onto a sports field which was used for search lights which clearly the Germans wanted to hit. One day they succeeeded, we had an Anderson shelter in the back living room and fortunately we were in there otherwise we would have been killed . My sister stayed in her bed and although the ceiling collapsed on her she survived.
I had two brothers, both in the services and both survived the war.
My elder brother was in the RAMC at the Sicily landings. They were in action and his MO was killed and my brother was injured and received the MM. He had a lot of shrapnel wounds including behind his eye but he went back.
My elder sister was a volunteer telephonist in a school for war purposes. She was on duty one day and there were 8 firemen in a shelter which took a direct hit and all 8 were killed, she had to deal with this.
My uncle had his house strengthened to protect from bomb damage but one came in through the side wall They were all in the basement and it killed my uncle. My aunt and niece were taken to hospital nearby but were then moved to one in Sutton where they would be safer The ward took a direct hit and they were both killed
