My lasting Memory of World War II is…my father on night patrol as an air raid warden, bringing home shrapnel to add to my collection. Sleeping in the underground shelter dug in the back garden instead of my bed. My bunk had a wire mesh door to stop me rolling out of the narrow space so I imagined myself as a rabbit in a hutch — If this was 1941, I would be 6 years old. The smell of the paraffin heater in the shelter.
