My dad is my hero. He is 82 yrs old, and has recently become a widower after 55 yrs of marriage. He joined the Royal Navy in 1937, so saw most of the war on active service. I'm not too sure of the all the details, but I do know that his ship was torpedoed on Friday 13th 194X? The ship was HMS Foresight (his first ship). I know he spent a few hours in the water before being rescued, and was injured by shrapnel. He went on to make a full recovery and served on ships which took part in the Russian convoys. He has at least 10 medals which are his pride and joy. I know till this day he suffers from flashbacks and dreadful nightmares.
