I was working in the office at Yanatas in Deptford when the van driver came in and told us what had happen. A V1 had hit Lewisham. It was a Friday and my normal routine was to go to the bank in the Broadway to get the wages. I wanted to go home immediately but I was told I had to go to the bank first. As I think back in retrospect, it was for my own good because of the devastation that had taken place. When I eventually got to Lewisham there was glass everywhere and the Police were reluctant to let me in to Lewis Grove. It was only when I said I lived in Mercia Grove that they let me through. Luckily my Mum was safe but had found an arm in the back garden and was still in a little bit of shock.
After the VI attack we now hadn't any shops and I had to go to Deptford
to get bread from the bakers in Tanners Hill. Rescue work had started with American service men and Italian prisoners of war helping and working all night. There is a plaque in the
pavement outside Marks and Spencer.
