As a child I remember seeing the red cross planes flying into Defford Aerodrome bringing back the casualties.
Evesham ( Waterside) and Worcester ( Ronkswood ) hospitals were built by the Americans for the casualties and they were taken there by the red cross.
I remember seeing some of the recovering soldiers in Worcester when they were able to get out. They wore a blue uniform and were easily identified.
I also remember the evacuees coming into the village. There were so many that the school had to use the Village Hall for extra space. We didn鈥檛 have any ourselves as we didn鈥檛 have enough room.
We used the School bell as the Air Raid warning and we would be scattered around the village and the instructions were to dive under a hedge if there was an air raid but we never had any really bad raids only practices. We also had to practice with our gas masks. We didn鈥檛 have shelters as there were no real targets so hedges and kitchen tables had to do.
On the night Coventry was bombed we slept under the table !
Living in the country we were the lucky ones.
