Sir Harold Gillies was born in New Zealand and initiated the speciality of plastic surgery in Britain following his experiences in World War One. He published in 1920 his 'Plastic Surgery of the Face', which established this artistic science as an acknowledged brand of medicine and remained a definitive publication for many years. During World War Two he was responsible for setting up plastic surgery units throughout Britain. In 1957 he published 'The Principles and Art of Plastic Surgery', still a major work on this subject. His encouragement of his younger cousin, Sir Archibald McIndoe, led to McIndoe鈥檚 own great achievements in plastic surgery.
