I am extrmemly proud to say that my great Uncle James Conway was a member of the Marines during WWII and took part in Operation Frankton (Cockleshell Heroes). Unfortunately he was not one of the lucky ones and was executed by firing squad by the Germans at the young age of 19. Although the raid is very well documented not a lot is known about my great Uncles last days as a marine before being shot, I doubt I will ever find out. I did read somewhere that he spent a couple of days in a French hospital recovering from his wounds but tragically he was discovered by the Germans..the story may not be 100%.
My grandfather lost 3 of his brothers in the war, 2 KIA and the 3rd died of his wounds after the war.
If there are any other relatives of the Cockleshell Heroes out there I would love to hear from you.
