The siren always went at the worst time, when I was snuggled up and warm in bed. I had to get up and drag on my siren suit, navy blue wool cloth with a "backdoor" in case I needed to go to the toilet. Felicity was a baby and she cannot remember the concrete steps diving down into the dugout, the little metal frame bunks my dad had made or the damp musty smell, like mushrooms. When we were all safely in, uncle Will closed the steel door and we settled in for two or three weary hours. I never slept until the All-clear went.
