Muriel Dobson worked in a laundry at Whitley Bay during the war. She was sworn to secrecy about the laundry work they had to do, as they cleaned the uniforms of the men and women who worked on the submarines based at Blyth.
One day she was checking some pockets before cleaning an item, and found a piece of paper. The first word she spotted was 鈥淎chtung鈥! That鈥檚 strange she thought, realising this was a German word. She told her supervisor, Maisie, (who had in fact been trained by Muriel鈥檚 own mother), who told Muriel that she ought to report it to their manager.
Next, Muriel was told she had to be interviewed by the plain clothes military police. She told the story, and was sworn to absolute secrecy. Six months later she was called back and was told that her actions had alerted them to a spy on the submarines!
It just goes to show how everyone played their part in the war!
