My lasting Memory of World War II is…running from the shelter in Boxton Street, Eccles, aged 5, wrapped in blankets during the night of the Manchester Blitz, to another shelter in Corporation Street. Seeing the explosion and hearing the bombs. Our house was hit and I was taken through the devastation of Piccadilly and Manchester centre next morning to stay with cousins in Hyde for many months. I also remember wonderful ‘sing-a-longs’ and fun in the shelters but was shocked when witnessing the severe casualties.
