During the Second World War, my father was a little boy growing up in East Yorkshire in the city of Hull. This is a brioef account of what everyday life was like in the 1940s. His account starts decribing the house he lived with his sister and mother and when not away on active service his father. Ray recalls : -

"The house in Cambridge Terrace was a two up / two down, my parents having one bedroom and my sister and I, who is four years younger than me sharing the other, indeed the same bed. Incidentally the two down related to a living room and a kitchen plus an outside toilet outside in a tiny yard, which created an incredible degree of bladder control particularly on the cold dark nights and the wind had blown the candle out.

We lived in Cambridge Terrace when my sister, Barbara was born and I can remember sitting with my Grandma in front of a glowing open fire waiting for my Mum and Dad, plus my new sister.

That particular memory has always been one of my most vivid recollections.

There are several memories of that parlour and Barbara, one being when she had measles and as the dreaded crisis point came the room temperature had to be maintained as far as possible at one level".
