Dunkirk was terrible. I was very lucky to get back from there. Lots of people were machine-gunned by German aircraft. A destroyer brought me and a friend back and it was good to be home. After that we prepared for D-day.
I went to a concentration camp - a sight I will never forget. Dead bodies piled high in pits! We took people back behind the front lines for treatment.
The day war in Europe finished we were in Lubeck (Baltic) and celebrated with the Russians. A lot of them had come across the river and had had frozen limbs etc. and so had spent a lot of time in hospital. We stole wine from all the hotels and some people got very drunk .
(Mr. Emberson is 86 years old and was born in Broomfield)
