I was living near Bearwood but my mum had to go into hospital so I had to live with my aunty in West Smethwick where all the factories were. I thought it was very exciting. My aunty had a corn and seed shop supplying hay for the horses and a green grocers. I remember going on fire watch duty with my dad. I was only 6. We stood on the factory roof and watched the bombs coming down and the fires. I remember seeing a big orange glow in the sky and one of the men said 鈥 Coventry is getting it tonight 鈥
I also remember going to a public shelter in W Smethwick park. It was about midnight and we were all settled. My Dad and his mates arrived from the pub 鈥漈he Londonderry鈥 with stainless steel buckets full of beer. They had bought them in case the pub got hit!
