[songs of the war — Vera Lynn]
Like a lot of singers she started as a Dance Band singer. In Sept 1939 she recorded “We’ll meet again”, and somehow or other this song suggested “We’ve parted, but we WILL meet again”. That was the start of it. Then she was picked up by Radio, and on radio she had a programme entitled “Sincerely Yours”. This was letters to and from members of the Forces to the folk back home. And this is what made her so very popular.
[She became the Forces Sweetheart]
She did. And later on, Dame Vera Lynn.
