I was evacuated to Southport first of all. I finished my educaion at a school in Hillside. It was thought safe to go back home but as soon as I got back the raids got bad again. This time I was evacuated with my two cousins to Wigan Wallgate. We were lucky to get one sausage and half a tomato for our tea and wee very hungry most of the time. I got a job in a tin works and had to climb a ladder to get into work. We were so hungry we broke open cupboards and stole corned beef and tinned fruit. We hid the tins under the mattress and of course were found out. The woamn we were staying with brought the priest, who told us we had committed a mortal sin. At this point we ran away. The woman's mother was doing the washing in a dolly tub, blocking our exit. We pushed her and she fell into the tub with her legs in the air. We escaped and ran and ran until it was nightfall. We were very frightened and screamed at a shadow thinking it was a man. We found a toilet and stayd there all night. In the morning we stole jam butties from some children, bunked on a train, got off at kirkdale station in Liverpool and tried to sneakpast the ticket collector. He got hold of us by the scruff of the neck and wwe innocently gave our proper names and addresses. We got to my grandmother's house (she was the matriarch) and were overcome by the smell of scouse. She bathed us straight away as we were black and our hair was like rats tails
