I was 18 years old at the onset of the war. I was living in Newcastle-under-Lyme.
My sisters played in the air raid shelter.
We were all fed up of getting up at night when sirens went off. One evening there was a different sound to the aeroplanes. So I ran out in my night clothes to the shelter. There were loud bangs, lights in the sky and mother was praying. The next day a huge crater was found in the golf course next door, where an un-exploded bomb was found and had to be disarmed by the army.
In the afternoon Auntie had been shopping and bought beef for tea. All the bombing had re-arranged the pantry and the beef and pork had swapped places!
