Martha Martel (née Hubert) interviewed by Lynne Ashton of the Guernsey museum.
Recording transcribed and edited by J David
I….….….. So how did you get to work, because you were living quite a way away?
Mrs Martel. We used to ride our bikes, and then the tyres wore out, so we had hosepipes, we had quite a lot of hose around from the greenhouses, they were very hard to ride, and you had this clunking noise all the time where they were joined up with wire. I had two bikes stolen out of the garage overnight, the third was my mother’s bike, I used to use hers to get in and out of Town.
I….….….. So the chances of having things stolen, if you had things, was quite high
Mrs Martel. Very, yes. My father used to fix up all these square petrol cans, and he’d put sand in, because if it was a windy day they had to stay on the windowsills, and we had strings all across the yard in front of the house, and he’d do that every night, it took him quite a while, I can tell you, and he’d put them all in front of where we kept the rabbits, and he’d also have a huge chain with a big padlock on, so that if anyone went into the stable.
