I was evacuated to Bradford in Yorkshire from my home of Kingston-on-Thames during the war, I was about five or six at the time. My father was not in the war because he suffered from bad varicose veins and instead he stayed at home and worked. I can remember receiving a gift of colouring pencils and a stuffed doll from my father and it was so fantastic because everything was so scarce at the time and as children we had nothing, I was so happy to receive this gift.We had our own coupons as children and were allowed a quarter of sweets a week, we would take our tokens along to the sweet shop. We had to have powdered egg instead of fresh because fresh produce was not readily available, we would use our kitchen table as a shelter. My husband was evacuated to Hull during the war which was not the best of places to go as it was bombed. My mother-in-law told me that when my husband was a baby and was asleep in his cot there was a bomb that shattered the glass in the window and it only just missed him.
