This story was passed on to us by Sylvia McFarlane , a member of Horley Local History Society.
Grandma refused to use the Shelter provided by her family. During one air raid her daughters ran to the shelter but she stayed indoors, cooking the lunch. The raid was a heavy one, and very close to their home and when the "All Clear" sounded the ladies ran indoors to find Grandma. She was no-where to be seen amidst the dust and rubble but a weak cry from the corner of the room showed she was still with them. I should explain she was a tiny lady, no really tiny and she had been blown by the blast right across the room and ended up stuck in the long-case clock! Once extracated she was slightly bruised but otherwise unharmed and caused much hilarity describing her 'flight' across the room and into the clock!
