This story is just about my grandad who was in the royal navy. He served on many ships (one of the most luxurious was the wolworths (as in the store) private ships. My grandad was also a boxer (a school boy champion) he had many fights in the navy.
This much my grandad told myself and even his son (my dad). However what he never told us was that he was one of the few men that were in the comando's. It wasn't until my grandad passed on and we found his navy records that we found his certificate stating that he had survived in scotland on his own for the required time to become a member of the of the most fascinating regiments. I suppose my grandad either didn't want to talk about it or couldn't i will never know.
They do say that when someone deliberately doesn't talk about something then they really did something heroic as did many men and women that gave their lives to save our country.
After leaving the navy my grandad continued to train boxers and was a trainer for the great british olympic and commonwealth games (i cannot remember the specific dates). But no matter what other things he accomplished in his life I know that what happened to him his brother and his friends in the war was never far from his mind.
