At the age of 12 I was evacuated with my mother and baby sister aged 4 from the school in Bethnal Green, East London to Liverpool Street Station and ended up at our destination in Suffolk. A lady took us to a one up one down cottage, which was barely furnished, I remember my mother's face when she was informed that there was no electricity just oil lamps and for water there was a well at the bottom of the garden. We were there for three weeks and my mother never grumbled but when my father came down, saying all was quiet in London, she returned home with him and took my sister with her. I was transferred to a farmhouse with my headmistress, which was awesome but when a school inspector came one day to suggest that children who wanted full time education (we have previously been sharing the local village school for a half day each). I was the only one who put their hand up and one week later I was taken to Oxford where I lived with a very nice couple and the main of the house was a warden at one of the colleges in the city. I think it was Merton College. I stayed with them until 1942 when my mother and father were bombed out of our home in London and rented two rooms in Headington eventually they rented a house and we were a family again.
