Working for the Americans.
My husband was called up and posted to Bomber Command. We were married in 1943 and the following year I was called up and drafted to the 9th Air Defence Command, a joint command for both US Army and Airforce, in London. They were stationed near Chalk Farm and although I lived in New Malden, I had to travel by train every day.
I worked as a civilian in an office as a typist for Colonel Crumine in the Intelligence Unit, which was top secret. I knew what was happening on 鈥淒-Day鈥 and was told what was happening in France. My husband came on leave every 6 weeks, so I didn鈥檛 see him very often.
I often came home on the train carrying assorted fruits given to me by the Americans working in the office, and I often wondered what fellow passengers thought I鈥檇 been doing!!
