I was among the first British troops to land on D-Day on Sword Beach, for which I received 拢20 for being the first from my home town of Pontefract. That was quite a large sum in those days - worth a few week's wages.
I was a section leader and after a hard day's fighting on the beaches we moved inland near a little place called Lion-sur-Mer, near Quistreham.
We only carried self-heating cans of soup with us so I thought the lads deserved a hot meal. I sent two of them down to a railway track to see if they could find anything useful for cooking and they came back with some containers.
So we gathered some vegetables from a field nearby, dug a hole in the ground and lit a fire to cook a meal.
Our officer came by two see what I was doing and offered to put his rations in with ours. Everybody was happy with the result, which was far better than a can of soup.
I received a certificate and medal from the French Authorities in the Abbaye aux Dames in Normandy.
