It was during the evacuation of the town that a distant relative of mine was fighting a rear guard action to keep the Germans from taking the town. We all know some of the story that day from the pages of our history books. My relative was coming to a small farm house just outside the port side of Dunkirk where fellow army personnel were fighting too keep the enemy at bay when they were taking the turn of night watch in between the heavy shelling that was constant too tire the troops as it was near the end of talking the troops of the beachhead and all seemed too be in order too pull out that’s when they thought then had cleared all the farm house and they came across a German land mine and my relative was the one whom triggered the mine and was killed instantly. No one else was killed as this was the last action that they all saw on the beaches as the rest of the troop was taken of the beach on a Royal Navy Frigate
The name of my relative was William Gordon whom became my Grandfathers Uncle or he may have been his brother I am not sure of the direct relationship as I know he was also a member of the local Orange Lodge Which I also am a member and he also held the same office while he was on active service.
The name off the Lodge is Albert Street Church Memorial.
William was a well liked member as some of the last remaining older members still remember the singing voice that he had.
