I heard this account from my uncle,Ian, The story was told to him by my mother who was an Ambulance driver in london in the dock area during the "Blitz'
The Elephant and Castle was an underground station, so old it dated back to Queen Victorias time. The constuction took into account that steam trains were in use at that time. It was built very deep and went under the Thames. Their were "vents" to take care of the smoke.
Guy's hospital ivacuated the childrens wards to this underground area which was vast, and it proved to be adequate for its perpose, until a bomb made a direct hit on one of the shafts. My mother showed pictures of this tragedy to my uncle, who discribed what he saw to me. He said " you know what a childs sand-pit looks like? with things scattered around, their was a London bus lying on its side a hundred feet down. My mother was there and helped bring the bodies of the children out.
My mother never talked obout this herrendous tragedy. And since she is suffering from Altzeimers i cannot verify any of this story. If anyone can shed some light on this story or direct me to a link , i would be most greatfull.
