Where one of the big bombs had dropped in Bristol after the November blitz they put in a water tank so that the fire service could fight the fires. As kids we used to go to the local pond by the brickworks and catch newts and sticklebacks and put them in this tank. By the end of the war it was alive with newts. We used to play in the bombed houses. We would go in and there would be people鈥檚 possessions all over the place but nothing was ever stolen. Eventually I was evacuated to stay with an aunt in Wiltshire supposedly to get away from the war but we were surrounded by airfields. I stayed there a couple of years whilst everything was repaired at home after the blitz. As kids we used to pick up all the shrapnel and small fins off the incendiary bombs, sometimes the metal was still hot.
