Crew of F for Freddie beside their "Lanc"
622 Squadron were based at Mildenhall in Suffolk and one of the crews is shown here alongside their Lancaster bomber, 鈥淔 for Freddie鈥.
The crew were, from the left: G Forsey (Engineer), L Lund, (bomb aimer), A Moore, (pilot), R Davis, (rear gunner), J Thompson, (mid upper gunner), B Dawson, (wireless operator), and R Price, (navigator).
The navigator, Ray Price, is my father and was a member of the Stratford upon Avon branch Air Crew Association until he and his wife Doreen moved to Pickering, North Yorkshire.
Like many Lancaster crews they flew many varied and hazardous operations. Prior to one operation the rear gunner had a wiring board moved from above his head in the turret because of his height. On return from the mission he reported to the pilot that his heated suit had stopped functioning. Because frostbite would have been a severe problem, the pilot told the gunner to move up into the fuselage. On landing they discovered that a piece of flak had penetrated into the wiring board which had probably saved his life.
