Being born in the war, I was still so young and did not realyize the significance of all the people who talked to me of their experiences.
Wagg Smith sticks out in my mind how he spoke of the times in the First World War he mended roads behind the front lines, that had been hit by artilary shells. They always asked for him, it's a pitty now I did not listen or write down his experiences, mending roads under fire. Others on the Dardenels who lost their toes in the extreem cold, and what happened to them. A neibour who had his face displaced and had a nervious twitch, from being gassed in the first world war. The people in the second world war did not want to speak much about their experiences, although I did pick up one or two stories. German prisoners of war, working on the farms, not guarded at all and trusted to go to their alloted farms and work. All the farmers said they were good workers and did a good job, many stayed behind of course. Stories of fighter aircraft German overhead, but eventually caught up by Spitfires or Hurricane and shot down. Do others have the experience that people just did not want to talk about their wartime experiences?
