After one particularly heavy raid over London during the Blitz a 1,000 bomb landed nearby, deafening us and filling the air of our shelter with thick dust.
We had the two aging grandmothers with us and one started to cry. She was upset because her old cat was somewhere around. Dad went to look for the cat so that he could ease her worry. He went to her house across the road and started his search. Out back was nothing but a huge awful crater where the bomb had landed. The house was little more than a few timbers and remnants of furniture. He started up what was left of the staircase when another stick of bombs came hurtling down. Dad crouched down and waited for the worse to happen but suddenly found himself upside down with his feet trapped in what was left of the stairs. A scarey moment for him, but it had its funny side because the blast had turned on the radio which was pounding out the tune of "I ain't got no body'. We never did find the poor cat though!
