Stanley as the Best Man at the wedding of George Foulger and Kathleen Coombes at Bexleyheath, Kent in April 1939.

Stanley Colmer / Kolmer / Cormer (I am unsure of the spelling) married Primrose Foulger. He was a Hampden pilot. The Hampdens were twin-engine bombers, but by about 1942 they becoming obsolete and so were used by Coastal Command for minelaying.

It was during a minelaying sortie that Stan and his crew in their Hampden came across a German Flak Ship. Their aeroplane was badly damaged by the anti-aircraft fire that came up from the ship. Stan managed to fly the stricken aeroplane back to England where the rest of the crew bailed out. Stan then tried to land the aeroplane, but it crashed and he was killed.

I heard this story from my late grandfather when talking to him about the war and asking him about Primrose鈥檚 first husband. Primrose went on to remarry and died peacefully in 2004.

I have submitted this story as a tribute to Stanley and the ultimate sacrifice he paid.

I have also written an account of some of the personal experiences and stories told to me by my late grandfather George E Foulger who died in 1992.
