My Dad, Henry Brewitt, was one of several soldiers waiting to disembark in Algiers Harbour for duties in North Africa.
On the way to Algiers the best bunks had been occupied by the American soldiers. Our men had to 'rough' it in the lesser luxurious bunks.
The ship was torpedoed in the harbour and several men were killed. It was ironic that they were all Americans---- because of the positions they were stationed in the ship. No British men were killed.
My Dad died recently in April , 2004, at the age of 95.
John Brewitt (son)
