Aunt Mag had come on a visit to my home in Chester-le-Street. On finding I was ill (I had an abcess on the inside of my elbow) on her return home she took me back with her to Chelmsford to recuperate.
Some days later while out shopping the sirens went and we needed to go to the shelter as we were in the middle of the street with our shopping. As it was a V1 rocket over head.
My left arm had a strapping and a metal casing to protect the abcess. In my haste I had lifted the shopping basket with my left arm instead of my right, bending the wire support. At this time the all clear had gone.
Seeing this my aunt commandeered the bus and the other passengers telling them all I had been injured and needed to be taken to the doctors surgery.
None complained about the extra stop and I was taken to the doctors. Afer removing the bandages the doctor said "Herr Hitler" had done something good this time the abcess came away in one complete piece - it looked just like an egg without a shell, with 5 little legs - otherwise it would have meant an operation which I would have had to have waited months for.
