This story is a continuation from the related submission "How I Nearly Shot the Sergeant Major".
I also found out more about 1238 Field Company. It had been assembled from various units in North Africa, each of which had been told to transfer a given number of troops to the new company. Naturally, they handed over the worst! They were now in need of reinforcements because their strength had been reduced due to the large number doing jankers for some misdemeanour or other. This was not confined to lower ranks. A tank had to be requisitioned during the siege of Athens so that the Commanding Officer could be taken through enemy lines to hospital as he was suffering from VD.
However, it was a good unit to be with. I called itself "THE JOKAS", with the motto "Git Crakin U Jokas". Whereas American engineers put huge notices on all their bridges detailing
