This story was submitted to the People's War site by a volunteer from Diana Wilkinson on behalf of CSV 大象传媒 Hereford and Worcester on behalf Christopher Eynon and has been added with his permission. Christopher fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
Christopher was only 3 months old when the war broke however even though he was so young he has memories of life in Bristol during war years. One of his strongest memories concerned how frightened Christopher was when the sirens went, his mother would run with him to the Anderson shelter in the garden, he was only 4 or 5 at the time. He was terrified by the experience, this fear started when he noticed the searchlights in the sky and when the barage balloons ascended. The barage balloons were set up to prevent the aircraft making low attacks on the Avonmouth docks. The hausers attached to the balloons would damage any low flying planes intent on dropping bombs, the balloons formed a barage around the target area. Avonmouth docks was where food was coming into the country and troops and ammunition was going out. Christoper remembers the trains - they had a track at the bottom of the garden, and he would see hosptial trains full of the wounded from ships docking at Avonmouth, and in the other direction there would be troop trains travelling towards docks which was the embarkation point to leave for action. There were so many trains that sometimes there were train jams-Christopher would sit on the fence and shout to the troops from the USA - 'Got any gum chum!'
