As told by Pat Lloyd
On my mother鈥檚 side my gran lost two of her boys and she lost them very quickly. One of her sons - Patrick Costello - was going to be a pilot. See when they needed pilots they had to train them very quickly by shipping them out to Canada for training and then brought them back. So he was going (and already his brother had been killed) when the ship he was on was torpedoed. The middle of the ship was blown out. So the men on the top although the ship was sinking couldn鈥檛 get to the men down the bottom so they were trying to bring them up using ropes.
The priest on board insisted on being lowered down to be with the men. The ship did sink and everyone below drowned. My uncle was killed and the priest was awarded the George Cross.
