Liverpudlian, 72, widowed 2002. Good History Degree 1954, medieval and modern but specialised in the History of the United States, 1783-1861. That was when Modern History ended in 1870. Did post-graduate work in Economic History. Continue to research although I retired some years ago.
Taught History to Degree level: European 1870-1945; The Cold War; The Age of the Super-Powers; The Origins of the American Civil War; The United States 1865-Vietnam; other courses I forget. Supervised dissertations and theses.
Have written a number of articles and done some editing, newsletters and the like. Some IT competence.
WWII central to my formative years.
Spent much time on holiday/fieldwork in Normandy, read French and speak it torrentially but inaccurately, better when I am in my own field of interest: French civilians in Normandy 1940-44, which takes in the Resistance and the Battle of Normandy. More concerned with what went on south of the beaches than in the landings.
Have translated works on French in Normandy 1940-44. There are three main memoirs, all from the Orne: Marcel Launay (priest, Tournai-sur-Dive), "Dans la tourmente de la guerre"; Andr茅 Mazeline (chief of Orne F.F.I., subsequently Major in French Army). "Clandestinit茅"; Emile Banis (Flers, telephone engineer, Trade Unionist, maquisard in the F.T.P.), "Bonjour! Maquis......"
I used sources from the Archives d茅partementales in Alen莽on, interviews, materials from the Alen莽on P.C.F. and wide general reading, English and French, from which I derive a good knowlege of the Normandy campaign. I know much of the ground very well, having walked and driven over it for more than twenty years.
I wrote a monograph, "In the tempest of war", which is on CD (106,000 words), from this research. The CD was well received by IWM, Portsmouth D-Day Museum and a number of academics in Britain and the U.S. The work is still developing.
I expect to be seriously engaged academically in the Autumn preparing the book for publication, probably as a thesis.
I am interested in all aspects of WWII and 20th century History. I am strong on context and on working out where to find material. This is a legacy of my professional r么le supervising dissertations.
