Although I was born just after cessation of hostilities in Europe, I still have a keen interest about the effects of WW2 on the Home Front; in particular in and around my old neighbourhood.
This area was bounded by Canonbury, Barnsbury and Lower Holloway in Islington, North London. Specifically, it was centred in Highbury (actually Highbury Corner).
My childhood playgrounds were the bombed sites, and my first memories recall such everyday post-war activities such as shopping during the days of rationing.
I am looking forward to hearing from residents and ex-residents from Highbury, who have a tale or two to share. I am more than keen to know details about the destruction of Highbury Corner by a V1 flying bomb on June 27, 1944. The explosion was a direct hit on the Post Office and the northern part of Compton Terrace. Casualties were: 24 dead and 116 seriously injured. Little appears to be available from the press archives of the time - undoubtedly due to security and anti-hysteria reasons - so if there is anyone out there who can enlighten me, please add your comments to my pigeon hole. Digitised pictures would also be welcome.
Sincerely.
