Hi
I am wondering if anyone out there can remember my father.
His name was Kenneth Wilson and sadly he passed away in October 2004 aged 83.
He was born in Hanford S-O-T in 1923 had 2 sisters (Margaret and Dorothy (deceased))and on leaving school started work as a butchers boy and from there as a driver for Wedgewood.
He received his call up papers in 1939 and joined up in the RASC.
Prior to serving abroad in Europe and the Middle East(5th Army?) he was stationed in a town in the Scottish Borders in the South West of Scotland called Annan where he met my mother (Jean).
At the end of the war he returned to Scotland, married my mother and started (and finished) his life as a fishmonger, eventually owning his own business. He never returned to live in Stoke.
(He took on a fine Scots accent but on returning to his home town on visits soon returned to his native brogue which I struggled to understand !!)
I don't really have many stories to tell of his life in the forces but do recall my dad saying he went to France on D+3.
My grandfather (his father)was called Alfred and was a miner. I remember him well. He worked in what was known as Florence Colliery. My grandmother was called Emily. She had what we in Scotland call a "gammy leg" and used to wear a leg iron.(Caliper)
One of my dads old wartime pals was called Johnny Eyre and he used to Play Rugby League for Featherstone Rovers prior to the start of the war.
Perhaps this may jog some some memories.
If there is anyone out here who remembers my dad, please reply. I would be ever so grateful.
Thanks for taking the time to read this and thanks for any returns.
John.
