My one outstanding memory from Worlds War 11
is picking coal from the local pits for our home coal fires. We would be out in all weathers to keep the homes warm.
Like many of my friends I spent the war years at Swynnerton arms factory.

Message 1 - Coal Picking

Posted on: 22 November 2004 by John Redfern

We had a gang of mates all had their own little wooden trucks. We used to scrounge pram wheels or search for them on the 'shawdrucks' We had one lad always as a 'look out' in case the 'Pit Bobby' was about. I always figured that I could run faster than him even with two sacks of coal in my truck. We used to pick enough coal for the family then sell the rest for a shilling or one and six a bag (For Holly Lane Coal)

Hi
My grandfather was from Stoke on Trent and worked as a miner in Florence Colliery. His name was Alfred Wilson and was married to Emily. They had 2 daughters Margaret and Dorothy (deceased) and a son Kenneth (my father) who joined the RASC at the start of WW2 and married my mother and settled in South West Scotland.
My father passed away in October 2004.
Do you or anyone you know recall my grandfather or grandmother or any of the family?
The last adress I have for my grandparents is Niall Road, Hanford, S-o-T.
Regards
John.
