My father was responsible for the security, fire and ambulance at the BSA at the outbreak of war in 1939. After the air raids on the BSA Birmingham in August 1940 and on the 2nd October 1940 my father put my mother and 4 year old sister on a train to North Wales where I was born on the 7th October 1940. In November 1940 the BSA suffered it's worst bombing 53 killed and 89 injured our house was also destroyed at 2 the Firs Amoury Rd.Birmingham. After looking after the Fires, the injured and safety of the factory my father searched the rubble where my grandmother had been working thank God he found her alive and safe. My mother with my 4year old sister and I returned to B'ham for Christmas 1940 now living at 5 The Limes Armoury Rd. In October 1941 my father volunteered for the Royal Navy where after initial training at HMS Collingwood he was assigned to HMS Victory and then HMS Boxer on Atlantic convoys. In 1942 he was seconded to the White House Washington (I still have his White House Navy Pass and number), but have never been able to find out what he did can anyone help me. I wrote to the White House in 2002 the letter along with photographs and other documents were returned 18 months later address unknown! My father was then assigned to the HMS Rajah untill Feb 1946. I would appreciate any Photo's of the BSA and Armoury Rd. and any infomation on the exploits of HMS Boxer and HMS Rajah. My father sadly died in 1970. Four generations of my family worked for the BSA, my Grandmother worked for them through both World Wars and completed over 50 years service. At the outbreak of the war my father was classed as being in a reserved occupation therefore as he volunteered for the Royal Navy he gave up his right to having his position at the BSA when he eventually returned after the end of the war. When he retuned to the BSA his job was no longer available he turned down alternative offers and we found ourselves homeless as the house came with the job.
