We are University College Northampton Community Volunteers (UCNCV), a department within the university whose aim it is to place students and staff in voluntary roles in the community. We also develop our own projects working in partnerships with local groups and charities.
We've decided to get involved in the project because we want to value senior citizens in the community and encourage our students (of all ages) to bridge the intergenerational gap, and to break down stereotypical barriers. We have previously run a reminiscence project during which students spoke with senior citizens about the Second World War and then devised a performance from their memories. We presented this at an afternoon tea.
The students and senior citizens had a great time, and we felt it would be fantastic to renew our links with those involved previously, as well as inviting others to join us in this continuation of a theme. We're now inviting those with war memories onto the campus to meet with our volunteers, who are offering their IT skills to aid the senior citizens in the process of recording their stories.
We are also involving university staff in this project through our history department. We're all excited about learning more about WW2 and are looking forward to our first session.
