My gran used to tell us a story about how she was hanging the washing out in her garden (she lived in Wallscourt Road, Filton, Bristol- about two miles from the BAC where planes and engines were being built for the RAF). A huge bomber flew over just above the roof tops. My gran said she could see the pilot looking out smiling "he was all teeth he was" she would say. Immediately after she saw to her horror the swastika on the tailplane. Minutes later she heard the plane dispatch its bombs at the airfield. She was really shocked though the bit about him being all teeth always made us laugh.
