I am from a family which has never had any military interests. I became involved in the Army almost by accident - I wanted to learn to ride a horse! However, I was drawn into the War much to my parents' dismay. All through the period of WW2, I felt that I was somehow being shielded from the full horrors of the war. I missed Dunkirk, where many of my comrades became casualties, and later Singapore. This was because I had been sent to OCTU. Later, in Italy, I was posted to Divisions which, although in front-line positions, were not involved in any great battles.
During the war, my father also came out to Italy, albeit in a civilian capacity. I met him several times.
After the war, I worked as a civilian for the Allied Commission in Austria, where I met my wife, a former Wren.
I would be interested to hear from any other CSDIC members, as I have lost touch with my immediate circle of colleagues.
