Both of my grandfathers fought in the Second World War and in common with many men from this era, they said very little on their return.

I have a few details of them both and have been wondering how to start the research.

My paternal grandfather was mentioned in despatches twice, and I am fortunate enough to have all the medals - mostly campaign medals - with the exception of the oakleaves he earned. I have very little idea what he did to earn these. He died in 1978.

My maternal grandfather served in India and from what I gather, saw little action. I have some of his documents (e.g. his pay book) and so at least have a starting point. He died in 1993.
