I'm very proud of my father who was in Coastal Command in the war. He flew Hudsons and was in Iceland for much of the war. He was a distinguished pilot who was awarded a Distinguished Flying Medal for his action in sinking a U boat off Iceland in 1943. Although it is uncomfortable to accept that my father was responsible for the deaths of many young German men on that U boat, it is also easy to understand that it was a war against real evil where our liberties as British citizens were threatened in a very genuine and immediate way. So none of us can pass judgement on what our fathers had to do in order to preserve our freedom. Thankfully my father is still alive and well. He has many stories to tell of his life in the RAF and I'd like to encourage him to write some of them down so I can add them to this wonderful archive of memories and our history.
